When selecting a diamond, you’ll want to take into account the “4 C’s:” cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight. All four of these factors determine the quality and cost of the diamond.
Cut doesn’t refer to the shape of the diamond, but rather the angles and proportions of the stone. While nature determines the other three C’s, the diamond’s cut is determined by a cutter. A well-cut diamond reflects light from one facet to another and projects the light through the top of the stone. This is what gives a diamond its sparkle. This is why white river only sell stones with a very good or excellent cut grade.
Out of all the four C’s, cut is the most important. Even if you have the perfect colour, clarity, and carat, if the cut isn’t right, the diamond won’t have that fiery brilliance that you will show off to her friends.
To many peoples surprise, diamonds come in a variety of colours. Diamond colour is graded on a scale that ranges from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow). Truly colourless diamonds are the rarest and most expensive. White colour diamonds are the most popular. But when it gets down to it, diamond colour is all about preference. We recommend a F/G colour, but when your buying your diamond from us we will show you the difference in between the colours.
The fewer imperfections a diamond has, the clearer, and consequently, more expensive it is. We at white river will discuss the clarity of the diamond and explain all about “inclusions.” Inclusions are other minerals or tiny fractures in the diamond. The fewer inclusions the better.
Like colour, clarity is measured on a scale. SI1 and SI2 are slightly included but you won’t be able to see the imperfection with the naked eye. This is the quality we recommend, but just like the colour at white river we will explain to you the different clarities so you understand the difference and know exactly what your purchasing.
Carat refers to the weight of a diamond. The heavier the stone, the more you’re going to pay. However, there’s no need to get to caught up on the carat weight. Through proper mounting and shaping.
It's always a good idea to come to us with an idea of the type of diamond you are looking for. On your first visit we can then explain the finer details of this diamond to you.
This way you’ll know exactly what you are buying and completely understand what cut, colour and clarity you have picked for your engagement ring.
Next, we work with you on designing your ring. Going through metals and styles we then create a CAD image for you to approve. Then, we make your ring in a wax form, so you can see exactly what your engagement ring is going to look like.
Once you have approved the wax, we cast in the metal of your choice.
By purchasing your ring this way, you can tell/show your future partner the story of how the ring was designed. From the computer image, we then produce two waxes, so the love of your life will be able to see the thought and detail you have put into creating the perfect engagement ring.
This process usually takes three weeks and at the end you have something that lasts a lifetime.
If your ring doesn't fit quite right we will resize the ring until it fits perfectly. There is no extra cost for this.
If you are local we will deliver to you in person, otherwise it will be posted to you by Royal Mail special delivery.
We offer free lifetime cleaning on all jewellery purchased from us.
