There are a few important factors you need to consider when you are purchasing an engagement ring.

We would advise on reading the information below on the four C’S and our FAQs, this will give you an insight into purchasing the perfect engagement ring.

Our exclusive gallery above is designed to inspire you, so take a look, then book an appointment to come and see one of our experts.

When selecting a diamond, you’ll want to take into account the “4 C’s:” cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight. All four of these factors determine the quality and cost of the diamond.

Four C's

Cut doesn’t refer to the shape of the diamond, but rather the angles and proportions of the stone. While nature determines the other three C’s, the diamond’s cut is determined by a cutter. A well-cut diamond reflects light from one facet to another and projects the light through the top of the stone. This is what gives a diamond its sparkle. This is why White River only sell stones with a very good or excellent cut grade.

Out of all the four C’s, cut is the most important. Even if you have the perfect colour, clarity, and carat, if the cut isn’t right, the diamond won’t have that fiery brilliance for your fiancée to show off to her friends.

You might be surprised to hear that diamonds come in a variety of colours. Diamond colour is graded on a scale that ranges from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow). Truly colourless diamonds are the rarest and most expensive. White colour diamonds are the most popular. But, when it gets down to it, diamond colour is all about preference. We recommend a F/G colour. We will always show you the difference between the colours when you are buying a diamond from us.

The fewer imperfections a diamond has, the clearer, and consequently, more expensive it is. We at White River will discuss the clarity of the diamond and explain about “inclusions” which refers to other minerals or tiny fractures in the diamond. The fewer inclusions the better.

Like colour, clarity is measured on a scale and we will always explain the different clarities, so you understand the difference and know exactly what you’re purchasing. We usually recommend a clarity of SI1 or SI2 (“SI” stands for “slightly included”). At these ratings, the inclusions are so minute that you won’t be able to see the imperfections with the naked eye.

Carat Weight

Carat refers to the weight of a diamond. The higher the weight, the more the diamond is likely to cost. Carat doesn’t necessarily impact the size of the diamond and many people are pleasantly surprised to find bigger diamonds that weigh slightly less.

How does a bespoke engagement ring work?

It's always a good idea to come to us with an idea of the type of diamond you are looking for. On your first visit we can then explain the finer details of this diamond to you.

This way you’ll know exactly what you are buying and completely understand what cut, colour and clarity you have picked for your engagement ring.

Next, we work with you on designing your ring. Going through metals and styles we then create a CAD image for you to approve. Then, we make your ring in a wax form, so you can see exactly what your engagement ring is going to look like.

Once you have approved the wax, we cast in the metal of your choice.

By purchasing your ring this way, you can tell/show your future partner the story of how the ring was designed. From the computer image, we then produce two waxes, so the love of your life will be able to see the thought and detail you have put into creating the perfect engagement ring.

How long does it take to make a bespoke ring?

This process usually takes around three weeks and at the end you have something that last a lifetime.

What happends if a ring doesn't fit right?

If your ring doesn't fit quite right we will resize the ring until it fits perfectly. There is no extra cost for this.

If you are local we will deliver to you in person, otherwise it will be posted to you by Royal Mail special delivery.
